For some types of work, there is not much need to think about this question, for example, an electrician called in to repair a faulty light switch can reasonably be expected to achieve the goal (fix the light switch) at the end of the process of working on the goal (fixing the light switch).

Do you have the time?
Do you have the stamina?
Do you have the know how?
Do you know of a company that will honestly work with you?
Are there other more cost effective methods of driving quality traffic to your website?
How much money are you prepared to risk (gamble) on this method of achieving traffic?
What sort of chance does your particular site have against the competition?
If you have to solely rely on natural google listings, when do you need to see results?
Is the potential reward worth the journey?

What would happen if I did nothing other than the basics?

Nobody knows, only Google Inc., who may or may not rank you where you want to be for the keywords and key phrases within your website, (those both behind the scenes and visible to a browser within the text copy of the site)

Do I have a better chance if I do something other than the basics?

Probably, but not necessarily - this in our opinion is the blunt truth
